Crafting Beer: Traditional Techniques, Modern Brews

Over the past few decades Japan has developed a formidable craft beer scene, but before that, Japanese brewers spent centuries perfecting the brewing of sake. Today, American beer brewers have started to turn to Japan for inspiration, drawing on traditional sake brewing techniques and creating unique new hybrid beverages. At this talk, Joshua M. Bernstein, beer journalist and author of Homebrew World: Discover the Secrets of the World's Leading Homebrewers, traces how Japanese sake techniques and producers are influencing today's beer trends.

The Tale of Genji in Word and Image

Written in the 11th century by the Japanese noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu, The Tale of Genji is a masterpiece of prose and poetry widely considered the world's first novel. While following the amorous pursuits of its hero, the radiant Genji, the text offers valuable insights into the society and culture of Japan's classical era. In this talk Melissa McCormick, Professor of Japanese Art and Culture at Harvard University, provides an introduction to the tale and its captivating visual world, focusing on the paintings and calligraphy of the 16th-century Genji Album in the Harvard Art Museums, the subject of her new publication, The Tale of Genji: A Visual Companion.

Suminagashi: Japanese Marbling

Create beautiful patterned stationery using the ancient Japanese marbling technique of suminagashi. In this soothing art form, ink is floated on the surface of water and gently blown to produce intricately swirled patterns, each as unique as a fingerprint. At this workshop, Linh Truong, interdisciplinary artist and educator, teaches traditional suminagashi techniques and offers ideas for artistic experimentation.
